Membership Information

British Columbia College of Nursing Professionals (BCCNP)
Responsible for the regulatory oversight of all nurses in BC. My responsibility is to ensure that I follow the professional standards outlined by the association. The standards provide a framework of limits and conditions I am required to meet. The scope of practice works in conjunction with the professional standards, and outlines what activities I am educated and allowed to perform under the title of registered nurse.

Canadian Gerontology Nursing Association (CGNA) - in collaboration with the Canadian Nurses Association.

Membership is not mandatory after one receives gerontology specialty certification. There is an annual membership renewal with benefits including scholarship and research grants, journal subscriptions, support of one's area of specialty with education, specialty updates, attending annual conferences, and participation in local membership meetings.

Canadian Nursing Association (CNA )- is a national association that supports and speaks for all nurses as one voice on both national and international forums.
Membership to CNA is acquired through my provincial regulatory body. The Code of Ethics is outlined by CNA, which all members must follow. CNA defines the role of the nurse, and supports nursing leadership and specialization.

British Columbia Nurses Union (BCNU) - over 47,000 members strong.
BC's largest nursing union advocates for safe working conditions across all areas of nursing, supports education through workshops, conferences and financial support. As well, they negotiate collective agreements for its members which includes roles and responsibilities to the employer, wages and benefits.  My role as a member is to ensure that the guidelines provided by the union are followed.

Interior Health Authority (IHA) - Thompson/Caribou/Shuswap Region - My role as a registered nurse is in the Urgent Primary Care Learning Centre, first one of its kind in BC. I provide nursing care and education to patients from the community that meet the criteria for the centre. There is a learning centre area where I support University of British Columbia medical residents as they work with referred patients.
